93-Point by Int'l Wine Cellar.

Fully mature and drinking wonderfully well, the 1996 Château Calon Ségur has a classic nose of green tobacco, cedarwood, currants, and sous bois. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a wonderful sense of purity, polished tannins, solid mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. This is classic, focused, old school yet pure, balanced Bordeaux goodness. It has another two decades of prime drinking ahead of it.

Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new French oak.

History of Chateau Calon-Ségur:

Chateau Calon-Ségur was the first wine estate in the commune and is classified as a Troisième Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves and is unique in the Médoc as the vineyards are in one single plot surrounded by tall stone walls. Winegrowing here dates back to the 12th Century, but the name, Calon-Ségur, was first seen in the 18th Century. At the time, the château was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Châteaux Latour, Lafite and Margaux. Calon-Ségur's vineyards are planted on clay and gravel soil, giving the finished wines power and finesse.

The St. Estephe village contains two second growths, Chateau Montrose and Cos d’Estournel.
