Practicing Organic!

It is a classic vin de garde, with a saturated ruby/purple color, and a tight but promising nose of sweet plum and cassis fruit intertwined with underbrush, vanillin, and licorice scents. The wine is ripe, medium to full-bodied, and rich, as well as unyielding, ferociously tannic, pure, and layered. The finish is extremely dry (sec, as the French would say), with a brooding angularity and toughness. In spite of this, my instincts suggest the requisite depth is present to balance out the structure. This effort will also require a decade of cellaring.

Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc.

History of Château Rauzan-Ségla:

Château Rauzan-Ségla is a second growth from Margaux, Bordeaux, as set out in the 1855 classification of Medoc and Graves. The wine of the same name is rich and concentrated, and is often considered one of the best of the second growths. Soils are clay gravels on a Quaternary river terrace with areas of deeper fine gravel.

The château was initially founded under the name Domaine de Rauzan in 1661 by Pierre Desmezures, an important figure in Bordeaux's history who, at the time, also owned châteaux Margaux and Latour. Eventually, the property came under the control of the Baroness of Ségla, Catherin de Rauzan, who named it Rauzan-Ségla for herself.
