The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a very detailed, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry jam and light orange peel aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry opening, a smear of dark chocolate combining nicely with the dark berry fruit, but it is unapologetically backward and surly on the finish compared with the Echézeaux or the Vosne Les Chaumes.
Les Beaux Monts is a premier cru vineyard of the Vosne-Romanée appellation in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy's Côte d'Or heartland. A large patchwork of vineyards on the upper mid-slope just above the Echezeaux Grand Cru site, Les Beaux Monts even claims a corner of the Grand Cru for itself. This vineyard is making a full-bodied yet elegant wine with ripe fruit characters.
