The 2021 Vandella Scarrow opens with juicy black raspberries, red plums, and blueberries with spicy notes of cloves, anise, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The extended aging in French and Hungarian oak not only allowed for supreme tannin integration and a super smooth mouthfeel, but the spices from the Hungarian oak add a whole new spectrum of aromas and flavors. This wine is truly delightful because it offers a different perspective through its rare blend of Southern European varietals.
Blend: 50% Touriga Nacional, 45% Mourvèdre, and 5% Syrah aged 30 months in 30% new French and Hungarian oak.
 
Scarrow is an old English word meaning "a faint light in the shadows". In this haunting blend, Touriga Nacional plays lead as the scarrow; a scarce gem in an over-saturated world of better-known varietals ~ Aaron Robinson.

His background in music composition is fundamental to his winemaking, believing the role of the winemaker is similar to a composer’s, gently coaxing the final product to its fullest expression.
Aaron produced Scarrow from hillside vines in Paso Robles, formed by the vintage and composed to allow the land to speak for itself, determining the blend’s components each year.

While pursuing our dream of winemaking, serendipity stepped in and led us to unearthing a vintage cast iron ghost that was buried beneath the vineyard floor. Being that a “Vandella” in folklore is a dream invading ghost, naturally, the relic became our mascot, and a symbol of inspiration that there was a greater power propelling us to risk it all.
…And that is how this project has developed – one happenstance after the next, driven by immovable passion and the determination to create the most delicious, standalone wines on the market.
We work with grape varietals we believe in, and give little consideration to trends or what the industry might deem “marketable”. Our wines are never hurried nor manipulated, rather they are a keen orchestration of skill and soil, conceived of imagination, and produced in collaboration with Mother Earth. Every bottle of Vandella tells a unique story that vividly illustrates the all-consuming obsession of the artisan spirit.
What began in 2011 with a mere 50-cases, continues to grow each year. In 2017, we purchased the home of our new winery and future estate vineyard in Napa, California.
